Impact Forum V: Elections

  • Civic Hall

Our 5th Impact Forum was held on September 14, 2016 at Civic Hall, NYC's foremost center for civic technology & innovation, on the topic of Elections. Election Systems are best understood by the rules and incentives constructed around them. Evaluating the United States’ and New York’s Electoral Systems reveals a series of important policy choices that will shape what our electorate will look like in the coming decades. Impact Elections will dig into key question such as: How does money predict elections? How will technology shape voting of the future? Does the current voting system fundamentally fail certain segments of our country's population? What can voting systems from other nations tell us about options for change?

Impact Experts composing the panel at Elections included: Ann Ravel (Federal Elections Commissioner), Gustavo Rivera (New York State Senator), James Bopp (Plaintiff's Attorney for Citizens United v. FEC), Richard Briffault (Professor, Columbia Law School), the legal advisor to Stephen Colbert's Presidential Campaign, the President of the NYC Campaign Finance Board, and more.

Impact Forum IV: Borders

  • Soho House

What makes a sensible immigration policy? How should borders define citizenship, residency, and rights? 26% of the U.S. population is either a first- or second-generation immigrant. It is estimated that 30% of New York residents are born outside of the United States. The Impact community joined a panel of top experts on immigration-related policy and social justice for a dialogue on the future of the US immigration system, hosted at the Soho House.

With the rise of charter schools, waste in public education funding, influence of teacher's unions, and the difficulty in compensating success: what are the principles and design elements of best educational systems of the future?

Inaugural Impact Forum

NYC is filled with motivated, brilliant individuals with great ideas to give back to their communities or change them for the better. Those social entreprenuers, however, face huge challenges in getting their projects off the ground. A complicated legal & political environment, a crowded market for non-profit mindshare, hard-to-come-by connections, and a lack of seed financing are just a few of these obstacles. IMPACT was founded as a platform through which we could pool these resources and leverage them to help the best social entreprenuers in NYC succeed. Modeled after high-end startup accelerator programs and supported by individuals who know what it takes for public-sector initiatives to succeed, IMPACT is a new breed of non-profit. Thanks for supporting us. Check out some of the ideas we're working on, and consider bringing your resources to bear as an IMPACT Mentor.
